Everything has a coach now: your calorie counter, your watch, your workout log. In about a year, "AI coach" went from a rare feature to a headline on the App Store pages of some of the biggest health apps. What that headline doesn't tell you is what the coach can actually see, and that decides whether it's talking about you or about people in general.

The short answer

The best AI fitness coach depends on what you want coached. For losing weight through what you eat on iPhone, Fimbl is our pick: its coach reads your meals, moods, weigh-ins and activity, and connects them to why you eat the way you do. For other goals:

  • Google Health Coach for all-round fitness, sleep and wellbeing with a Fitbit or Pixel Watch.
  • Fitbod for AI-generated strength workouts.
  • WHOOP Coach for recovery and strain, if you wear a WHOOP.
  • MyFitnessPal Coach for nutrition advice on top of the biggest food database.
  • Noom for an AI assistant plus a real human coach, in the US.
  • MacroFactor for a weekly algorithm that adjusts your calories and macros.

A note on bias. We make Fimbl, and its coach is an eating and habits coach, not a personal trainer. Every claim about another app was checked against that company's own website, help centre, App Store listing or a named news report in November 2026. "Not documented" means we couldn't find the feature there, not that it definitely doesn't exist.

"AI fitness coach" can mean three different things

Search for an AI fitness coach and you'll get three kinds of app under one label. Knowing which one you need saves you from paying for the wrong coach.

  • Workout coachesBuild and adjust your training plan. Fitbod is the classic example. They rarely know what you ate.
  • Body-data coachesRead a wearable's sleep, strain and recovery data. Think WHOOP Coach and Google Health Coach.
  • Eating coachesRead your food log and goals. Fimbl, MyFitnessPal, Cronometer and Noom sit here, each in its own way.

If your goal is building muscle or running faster, start with the first two. If your goal is losing weight, you want a coach that can see your food, because a coach that can't see your plate can only talk in generalities.

The coaches, and who each one suits

  • Best all-round health coach

    Google Health Coach

Built with Gemini, it aims to be a fitness trainer, sleep coach and wellbeing adviser in one. It builds a weekly workout plan, reads your sleep, and analyses photos of your meals. The Fitbit app is now Google Health, on iPhone and Android.5, 6

Keep in mind: it needs Google Health Premium, is available only in certain countries, and launched first for Fitbit and Pixel Watch owners.

  • Best for strength workouts

    Fitbod

AI-generated gym workouts that balance your exercises, track muscle recovery and learn from your edits. If what you want is someone to tell you what to lift today, this is the one to try.7

Keep in mind: a subscription after a free trial, and its listing doesn't document food logging or a chat coach.

  • Best for recovery data

    WHOOP Coach

Ask questions and get on-demand answers based on your own biometric data: sleep, strain, recovery and stress. Hard to match if you're training for something specific and already wear the strap.8

Keep in mind: the app requires a WHOOP wearable and membership, and it isn't built around what you eat.

  • Best on top of a huge database

    MyFitnessPal Coach

Launched in June 2026, Coach turns your logged meals, goals and habits into nutrition guidance: food swaps, recipes, portion changes and restaurant picks. It can also answer questions about workouts.3, 4

Keep in mind: Premium and Premium+ only, in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

  • Best for a real person too

    Noom

Welli, Noom's AI assistant, gives fast, general answers on food, fitness and the programme. New US members can add a Premium tier with a dedicated human coach who checks in weekly, plus meal and exercise plans.9

Keep in mind: Premium is billed separately from the Noom Weight subscription and is US-only. Noom describes Welli's answers as general.

  • Best for nutrient-minded eaters

    Cronometer Crono Coach

An AI assistant in Cronometer Gold that reviews your diary, nutrient averages and targets to spot patterns, and you can tell it what to watch, like a fibre target. Cronometer says it won't change your diary or targets by itself.10

Keep in mind: Gold only, and it's built around nutrition data rather than hunger or mood.

  • Best hands-off numbers

    MacroFactor

Less a chat than an algorithm: it estimates your energy use from your weight trend and logged food, and adjusts your calorie and macro targets every week, however closely you followed them.11

Keep in mind: no free tier, and no chat coach documented.

  • Best AI coach for losing weight through eating, on iPhone

    Fimbl

A coach that knows why, not just how much. It reads your meals, the hunger and feelings you check in with, your mood, weigh-ins and Apple Health activity, finds your own patterns and suggests one small thing to try. The food diary, photo calorie counter and progress photos sit in the same app.

Keep in mind: iPhone and iPad only, the coach is part of Premium, and it doesn't write workout programmes.

Four questions to ask any AI coach

A confident, friendly answer is the easy part. Any modern AI can produce one. These questions show whether there's substance behind it.

  1. What can it actually read? Your food, your workouts, your sleep, how you felt? A coach can only be as personal as what it sees, so look for a clear list.
  2. Does it end in something to do? Good coaching narrows things down to one small change you can try this week, not a wall of general advice.
  3. Does it know its limits? An AI coach isn't a doctor, dietitian or therapist. It should say so, and point you to a person when it matters.
  4. Where does your data go? Food, mood and body data are personal. Ask whether AI is optional, what gets sent, and whether it's used to train models.

Does AI coaching actually work?

Honestly, it's too early to say much. A 2021 systematic review of AI chatbots for activity, diet and weight loss couldn't reach definitive conclusions, and found only one study that measured weight objectively.1 A 2023 meta-analysis was more encouraging about chatbots for physical activity, fruit and vegetable intake and sleep, but most of its studies were short and of weak quality, and it didn't look at body weight.2 We didn't find a large peer-reviewed trial showing that today's generative AI coaches lead to more weight loss.

The better-tested idea is simpler. Self-monitoring is one of the most consistent habits linked to weight loss, so a good way to think about a coach is as a reason to keep logging, and as a way to get something useful back when you do. If you want the bigger picture, see our weight loss app comparison.

The best coach isn't the one that sounds smartest. It's the one that gives you a reason to come back tomorrow.

Inside Fimbl's coach

We built Fimbl's coach around one question most calorie counters never ask: why? It works in three steps.

  1. NoticeLog a meal with a photo, your voice, a barcode or a search, and check in before and after: how hungry you were, how full you got, how you felt. It takes seconds, and you can skip it.
  2. FindFimbl looks for patterns in your own days, like which meals leave you with more energy or when snacking starts. Your first pattern is free. Every week, a reflection connects food, mood and energy.
  3. AskAsk your coach about your meals, mood or plan, and the answers come from your own days. It suggests one small thing to try instead of a new regime.
  • Fimbl weekly reflection titled Mornings that carried you: you logged six of seven days and your breakfasts landed before nine on five of them, with average calories, weight change and mood

A week, read back to youWins, patterns and one gentle focus, written about your week. Your first reflection is free.

  • Fimbl breakfast check-in asking which feelings you had before the meal, with chips such as craving, sluggish, satisfied and energized

What other coaches can't seeTen-second check-ins tell your coach how hungry you were and how you felt, not just what you ate.

What the coach sees, and what it never does. When you ask something, your message and the last 14 days of your diary, check-ins, mood, body-note symptoms, weigh-ins and goals go through Fimbl's servers to Google's Gemini API, along with steps and active calories if you've turned on Health sync. Your name, email, period days, Your story and your progress photos are never sent, and we don't train AI models on your data. Everything else in Fimbl works without AI. The privacy policy explains each feature. The coach offers general guidance and isn't a doctor, dietitian or therapist.

Can ChatGPT be your fitness coach?

For knowledge, it's very good. A general AI assistant can explain progressive overload, sketch a beginner's gym plan or suggest high-protein lunches, and it's a great place to start. Its limit is that it mostly knows what you tell it. It doesn't log your meals, it doesn't remember to ask on Thursday how Tuesday went, and copying your diary into a chat gets old quickly. Some assistants can now connect to health apps if you allow it, so check what that covers and what happens to your data.

A dedicated coach trades range for context: it can do less, but it already has your week in front of it. Plenty of people will use both, and that's a perfectly good answer.

Where Fimbl isn't the best choice

  • You want a training plan. Fimbl doesn't write workouts. Try Fitbod or Google Health Coach.
  • You want advice from your sleep and recovery data. WHOOP and Google Health are built around wearables.
  • You want a real person. Noom's Premium tier in the US has human coaches, and a dietitian is better still for medical needs.
  • You're on Android. Fimbl is iPhone and iPad only.
Our pick for eating

A coach that knows why you eat the way you do

Most coaches can tell you what to change. Fimbl's starts with what's actually going on in your days: your meals, your hunger, your mood, your weight. Then it suggests one small thing to try.

  • Answers come from your own days
  • Your first pattern and weekly reflection are free
  • AI is optional, and never trained on your data

Questions, answered

What is the best AI fitness coach app?

It depends on what you want coached. Fitbod is strongest for AI-generated strength workouts, Google Health Coach for all-round fitness and sleep with a Fitbit or Pixel Watch, and WHOOP Coach for recovery data if you wear a WHOOP. For losing weight through what you eat on iPhone, we recommend Fimbl, whose coach reads your meals, check-ins, mood, weigh-ins and activity.

What is the best AI nutrition coach app?

On iPhone, Fimbl is our pick if you want a coach that looks at why you eat as well as what, because it also knows your hunger and feelings at meals. MyFitnessPal Coach suits people who already use its food database, and Cronometer's Crono Coach suits people focused on vitamins, minerals and nutrient targets.

What is the best AI coach for weight loss?

Look for a coach that reads your food log and your weight. Fimbl does that on iPhone and iPad, alongside a photo calorie counter, a plan at a gentle pace and private progress photos. Noom is a good choice if you want a structured programme with a human coach in the US, and MacroFactor if you want your calorie targets adjusted automatically every week.

Is there a free AI fitness coach?

Most personal AI coaches are part of a paid plan, including those from Fimbl, MyFitnessPal, Cronometer and Google Health. Fimbl gives you your first weekly reflection and your first personal pattern for free. Noom says members keep access to Welli without its Premium tier, but Noom itself is a subscription. A general assistant like ChatGPT can answer fitness questions for free, but it mostly knows only what you tell it.

Can ChatGPT replace a fitness coach?

For general knowledge and simple plans, it can go a long way. It doesn't log your meals or workouts or follow up by itself, though, and it mostly knows only what you share. A dedicated coach has your data in front of it. Neither replaces a doctor, dietitian or qualified trainer when you have a medical condition or an injury.

Is an AI coach as good as a human coach?

Not for everything. An AI coach is available at any hour, cheaper and good at spotting patterns in your data, but research on AI coaching is still early, and a person is better at accountability, judgement and complex situations. Noom's US Premium tier combines both. If you have a medical condition or a history of disordered eating, please see a professional.

Does Fimbl's coach make workout plans?

No. Fimbl's coach focuses on eating, habits, mood and weight, and it can take your Apple Health activity into account if you allow it. For a training plan, Fitbod or Google Health Coach are better fits. Fimbl does have simple workout goals and reads your workouts from Apple Health.

Does Fimbl train AI on my data?

No. Fimbl doesn't train AI models on your data or sell it. When you ask the coach something, the request goes through Fimbl's servers to Google's Gemini API with only what the feature needs, and never your name, email, period days, Your story or progress photos. AI is optional, and everything else in Fimbl works without it.
